Universal Design for learning (udl)
UDL as defined by the federal Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008
-A scientifically valid framework for guiding educational practice that: (A) provides flexibility in the ways information is presented, in the ways students respond or demonstrate knowledge and skills, and in the ways students are engaged; and (B) reduces barriers in instruction, provides appropriate accommodations, supports, and challenges, and maintains high achievement expectations for all students, including students with disabilities and students who are limited English proficient. |
CAST.org
• CAST is a nonprofit organization that promotes the use of universal design for learning to expand learning opportunities for all students, including students with special needs. The CAST Web site provides a wealth of resources on UDL, including detailed guidelines on how to develop lessons that are based on the three UDL principles, checkpoints for each guideline, a UDL Systematic Change Tutorial, a UDL Book Builder, a leveled reading series called UDL Editions, a science lab writing site called Science Writer, and a UDL Lesson Builder.
